The Graveyard Digital Project

• As part of the Shirenewton 800 project celebrating 800 years of Shirenewton Church, we have digitised the graveyard records.

• The burial records index from 1771 onwards listed on this page are courtesy of the Shirenewton Local History Society. These are based on the records held at The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.

• The Digital Graveyard project was undertaken as part of Shirenewton 800, to commemorate circa 800 years of the church and village. The recent urgent repairs that have been carried out on the church were funded with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Garfield Weston Foundation, the Laing Family Trusts, Allchurches Trust, kind donations from individuals in the village and funds raised by the PCC over many years. The Digital Graveyard project has been delivered entirely though volunteer effort, with thanks to Bill Clark for coordinating the project (and doing a lot of the digitisation work) and to Tom and Claire Lewis for helping him with a lot of the legwork i.e. going round the graves and looking at who was where, and updating the spreadsheet accordingly. Additionally, many hours have been spent by your webmaster converting it all into webpages and cross referencing with hyperlinks to bookmarks, etc.

• There may well be errors in the transcription and in other areas. If anyone identifies any anomalies or errors, please let us know and we’ll verify and, where appropriate, rectify! Henceforth we aim to updated the records annually.

The graveyard is divided into 11 zones, with zones A to J (no I) & L being for graves and zone K being for the burial of ashes.

To open the hyperlinked grave map click here - note this has some extras graves not shown on the layout above and is generally updated annually. The PDF file will open in a new window or tab. Each grave has a hyperlink which will take you to the individual record which will be displayed at the top of the appropriate page - although see note 2 below. Note: The text in the url (which will be displayed in bottom left of your browser window) after the '#' refers to the grave number and occupant. For example; http://www.shirenewtonchurch.info/2020_graveyard_A.html#A4_William_Holder is linked to grave A4 and the first listed occupant is William Holder.

Note 1: Where there are multiple occupants in a single grave, only one name is linked from the PDF. This is the first name in the listing.

Note 2: If the record is near the bottom of a listing, the page will scroll as much as it can. Obviously the extent of scrolling is dependent on window size, screen size, etc. This means that the record may not be at the top of the page but will be in the displayed area. This is a limitation of HTML.

Note 3: All grave locations are approximate.

Note 4: The links from the PDF don't work on iPads or iPhones. This is a known Safari browser issue.
