The society surfaced as
a registered charity in the year 2001, following a course
of lectures ‘Discovering Old Shirenewton’ offered locally,
by Cardiff University, Centre for Lifelong Learning.
It now lists over 100 local
and some national history enthusiasts as members with
diverse interests, which include among it’s many facets,
archaeology, social and industrial evolution and genealogy.
The aims of the society
are to increase the interest and knowledge of the local
and wider community in the history, geography and architecture
of the Parish of Shirenewton, and it’s environs, often
expanding into nearby parishes, the county of Monmouthshire
and the rest of Wales.
It also assists in the
preservation, protection, development and improvement
of features of historic and public interest in the above
area, and exchanges information and advice with other
similar groups and associations.
Help us to record today
what may not exist tomorrow.
All ages of the community
are welcome to become involved in raising their awareness
of the local heritage by attending the regular monthly
evening meetings with a speaker, at the Huntsman public
house, by courtesy of the landlord, and/or finding out
what happens at the afternoon resource sessions in the
recreation hall. Would you like to assist with the ongoing
projects, or have help organising one in which you are
interested?
Maps, photographs and deeds
play a big part in the research and if you have any
to share, do contact the resource secretary with your
documents, or turn up at the rec. to a resource session.
With your permission they can be filed in our archives
or copied and returned to you.
Do you wonder why the Parson
had a Grove, or why Daggers Hill is so called? What
did the landscape look like? Who was Lowe and what did
he do?
Try us out. Come to a meeting
but first, look for the posters or … click here for
talks, venues and dates.
