More Historical Walks Around Shirenewton
|
The new walks publication
of 2007 leads the walker around the Parish
Boundary. It is in a similar format to the
Six Historical Walks Around Shirenewton
having been few researched walked and written
by the same members. There are a few
of the previous 300 printed available from
the resourse member who also has the new
"book"at £3.50 a copy.

Once again the delightful original
drawings are by Barbara Davies with the cover illustrating
an unfortunate youngster being beaten at one of the
markers. If you would like a copy it is available from
the society, it is also at some local hostelries and
the tourist information in Chepstow.
Naming and dating the people
and events in old photos which have been put into albums
continues, together with the record of WW1 and WW2 Memorials
and where possible old family connections.
Hard copies of the 1841 to 1911
censuses can be viewed with the discs at the resourse
meetings held each month on a Monday afternoon in the
recreation hall. Sometimes there is a different venue
or date, please check with a committee member or on
resources@shirenewton-history.co.uk
Please let the resource secretary
know if you would like to participate in the following
local projects, or any you would like to introduce:
Local Resource Centre:
This is our own parish archive
which is accessible each month, at informal get-togethers,
(extra visits by appointment). Most of which are housed
in the recreation hall with thanks to the recreation
committee.
Oral Traditions:
Recording memories of older villagers.
Photos and pictures:
Collecting and copying old photos
and pictures for discussion, and recording in albums
is very popular. They are often donated to the society
or reproduced with their owner’s permission and returned.
Books, maps and documents:
There is a varied selection to
suit every interest. Why not come and find out how to
decipher the deeds of your house or explore the tithe
map?
Religion:
All religious faiths and the
buildings are taken into account, and more research
is required to produce a chronological, spiritual history
of the area.
Llanmelin Fort:
Keep up to date with the CADW
initiative for preservation and access with the SLHS
/Caerwent Historic Trust / Caerwent and Shirenewton
Community Councils. CADW has recently purchased the
"poor wood" giving access to this historical
site, the means of monitoring the pathways and woodland
and by whom is currently being explored.
Plans for a map of the Parish
showing historical features, including the above wood
and Llanmelin fort, and ideas for where it should be
located is ongoing with CADW and the history society.
An input from the community council will also be requested.
