harpist plays the stones concert

Shirenewton Church welcomed Royal Harpist Jemima Phillips for a concert on the August Bank holiday - Monday 25th August 2008.

The initial intention was to hold the concert in the front garden of The Chantry where many people have admired the new natural stone sculpture provided, some believe, for the villages' entertainment. This stone sculpture has yet to be discovered by the 'new age' and rumours that there was to be 'frolicking' around the stones on the summer solstice were, your webmaster understands, somewhat wide of the mark. However, it was felt that the stones provided a wonderful setting for the honest burghers to commune with harp music.

Unfortunately the wettest August since records began (or something like that) didn't permit such outdoor activity and the Church was pressed into service. The excellent acoustics of the church did, however, add to the enjoyment of many a burgher.

Jemima Phillips is a professional Harpist who performed at the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla. (more information). She played a short concert at the Friends of the Church inaugural event and was, by general agreement, superb. Jemima was back by 'popular demand' and the event was well attended with approximately 80 people raising several hundred pounds for the extension fund.
