Celtic Trail (250 miles) - Day 2
Thursday
10th June

We left the Woodlands Hotel in Saundersfoot at 9:45am after a 'good' breakfast. Luckily it was downhill into the town. Then there were some mean hills but beautiful coast to Laugharne and its castle. Carmarthen and its Picton momument. We (well our Leader actually!) were determined to reach Kidwelly for lunch. We had lunch (well afternoon tea anyway) at 4:00pm in Kidwelly after completing 46 miles from Saundersfoot.

Four hours later things were getting 'desperate'. We were booked into the King Aurthur Hotel at Reynoldston on the Gower and believed it to be about 3 miles off the cycle track. It was 8:00pm we had cycled 75 miles that day and we were two miles off the track when we stopped to ask again. Unfortuantely the answer was consistent. Another 10 - 12 miles to go with two large hills in the way!! Help!! [If you take a look at the map (click here) you will see that Reynoldston is way down the Gower peninsular - the cycle track runs from Gowerton straight down to the Mumbles.] Life was further complicated by the fact that Mark was nursing a rear wheel puncture and was having to stop with increasing frequency to pump. We decided the answer was a 'man with a van'.

Thankfully Robert "I know everyone in Wales" Thomas was up to the challenge. Having narrowly failed to secure a van two miles and a hill earlier (due to the driver being over the limit), he spotted a house with a large white van (at the top of the hill - of course!) in the driveway and was able to pursuade its owner, Mario, that there was nothing he would rather do that evening than take the tired and sweaty cyclists the 10 miles to Reynoldston! So a big thank you to Mario who achieves the rank of a 'really nice person'! We surprised him the next morning by turning up unexpectedly at his coffee bar on the Mumbles - Verdis Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlour - its great go there!

Our thanks also to the King Aurthur Hotel. They had series of phone calls (including one to see if they had a van) to cover our changing plans and, despite not expecting us at a reasonable hour (who can blame them), were able to find us a table despite being extremely busy and served some excellent food - its great go there!
